Hawthorne Elementary was built in 1959, closed for a time, and then
reopened in 1990 when other
eastside schools became overcrowded. It was never meant to hold the
number of students that it
does now. All Madison area schools built since 1969 have a multi-purpose
room. Hawthorne never
got one. The school is incredibly low on space.
Here’s What
Things Look Like Now
· Two full classes share the same room
·
There is no computer lab
·
Gym classes have to double-up as well as share the
relatively small gymnasium space with
the lunch
program, the After School program, and Community Learning Center activities
·
The library is often closed for days to provide a
testing site for students, as well as being
utilized as a meeting place for mentors, and RIF
·
There are no classrooms for REACH or Strings
·
There is no designated space for tutoring or assessment
·
There are not enough restrooms for students or staff
·
The Custodian’s office was moved to the garage that
often contains gas fumes from the
lawnmower and snowblower.
·
The library is literally overflowing into the hall
·
At one point, the Strings class was conducted in the
entryway
·
Because the normal storage room is being used as office
space for a counselor, the main
entrance hall is now the receiving area, regularly
used to pile shipments for boxes
·
The hall is used for mentoring, tutoring, and
assessment, not allowing for quiet private
space.
Your Property Taxes have previously been used to support other
schools. Lincoln
Elementary recently received an
extensive addition. Our tax dollars need to be directed
towards our area school. It’s time
for some equity!
Hawthorne is currently working at
more than 120% its maximum capacity of students. The
current and future growth of our
community will directly affect the size of the student
population. New homes are still being
developed and our neighborhoods have many young
families
The quality of our school directly
affects the resale value of all our homes. Hawthorne needs
to brought up to the same level of
quality as other schools in our area.
Any building expansion should include
a Multi-purpose Room, 4 new and 3 remodeled classrooms,
new library space, a computer lab, new
teacher workspace and staff offices and additional bathrooms.
We need to get together and let
school board know we are over here and we care about our school.
It is time to provide Hawthorne Elementary with the space it needs now
and for the future. Tell them
that we support the addition to Hawthorne and that we need the whole
thing, not just a quick fix.
This may be our only chance at funds for some time. We have to make this
count.
